Even Jed Clampett says they’ve brought the neighborhood down. Donald Trump is still corrupt, incompetent, and amoral. In downplaying the pandemic, he said, “If we stop testing right now, we’d have very few cases.” In a typical mocking response, some smart*ss somewhere said, “And if we stop pregnancy testing right now, this family wouldn’t have so many damn babies.” Presidential response to crisis is business as usual. And to quote SNL’s Keenan Thompson appearing in a skit on a “Face the Nation”-type news pundit panel: “Ain’t nothin’ gonna happen. Ain’t nothin’ gonna change.” So what’s the upshot? Pandemic
Donald Trump is still corrupt, incompetent, and amoral. In continuing attempts to downplay the pandemic, he said June 15, “If we stop testing right now, we’d have very few cases, actually.” In a typical mocking response, some smart*ss somewhere said, “And if we stop pregnancy testing right now, this family wouldn’t have so many damn babies.” Nine states are recording record-high daily new cases, including Oklahoma, site of Trump’s upcoming Saturday rally (his first since “reopening” the country).
Also June 15, the president instructed his vice president, Mike Pence, to exhort governors on a conference call to lie to citizens that the current surge in cases is due largely to increased testing. Virtually all credible experts dispute that. Why the disingenuous, prevaricacious attempts to play down pandemic danger? To reopen the country, kick-start the economy, and get reelected. Meanwhile, people are dying needlessly due to inept and depraved White House leadership.
Police Reform
In a transparently empty attempt to show he’s responding to the nationwide, record-setting protests against police brutality (including murder) toward black and brown citizens, President Trump held a roundtable discussion on policing and race in Dallas June 11. But he forgot on purpose to include three top law enforcement professionals in the county — who are African American: the district attorney, Dallas police chief, and county sheriff.
Meanwhile, the Atlanta cop who shot and killed Rayshard Brooks in a Wendy’s — the crime was falling asleep in his car while waiting in the drive-thru line — was seen on video kicking the black suspect after shooting him dead. The officer has been charged with felony murder. Trump wants to study law enforcement’s use of chokeholds.
John Bolton’s New Book
Also this week, copies of Trump former national security adviser John Bolton’s tell-all book describing his 17-month White House tenure have been leaked to reporters despite DOJ attempts to block it even at this late stage. Among the neutron bomb revelations threatening to blow the lid off this presidency: 1) Donald adopted “obstruction of justice as a way of life”; 2) Secretary of State Mike Pompeo noted to Bolton of the president: “He’s so full of sh*t”; 3) Donald didn’t know Britain was a nuclear power; 4) Donald had to ask Bolton, “Is Finland part of Russia?”; 5) to seek a better trade deal, Donald approved of China supreme leader Xi Jinping’s plan to build concentration camps for its Uighur Muslim minority; 6) Donald “pleaded” with Xi for reelection help in the form of trade concessions; and 7) most shocking of all, Donald lacked the respect of numerous people around him, and many ostensibly hard-core loyalists mocked him in private.
Business as Usual
So this week’s presidential response to multiple crises is business as usual.
And to quote SNL’s Keenan Thompson appearing in a skit on a Face the Nation-type news pundit panel — with fellow panel members insisting that “this time is different” (e.g., when Trump said he “grabs women by the p*ssy,” when Trump asked Putin for help with reelection, when Trump extorted Ukraine for help with reelection, and now, that Trump begged China for help with reelection, and MAGA obstruction of justice is a way of life) — “Ain’t nothin’ gonna happen. Ain’t nothin’ gonna change.”
